VOV.VN - Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of the Mekong Delta of Can Tho Truong Quang Hoai Nam and new US Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City Marie C. Damour discussed the prospect of bilateral cooperation in a wide range of fields during their working session on December 2.
Damour hailed Can Tho as an economic hub of the region with quality agro-fisheries products that US investors pay heed to.
She voiced her hope that Can Tho and the US will benefit from a common strategy for studying multi-sectoral development and giving priorities to agriculture, environment protection and climate change adaptation.
The US Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is due to dispatch agriculture experts to Can Tho next year in order to study how to remove barriers in agriculture development, with a particular focus on food safety, improvement of soil and nutrition, as well as farm produce and seafood quality.
They will also help improve the capacity of local researchers, farmers and scientists, the US diplomat said.
Damour also wished that Can Tho and the ARS will deal with issues in agricultural development such as improving the output and quality of farm produce, protecting land and water resources, and ensuring food safety and hygiene.
The US side will continue working hand in hand with Can Tho to implement clean air and greenhouse gas emission projects to improve the city’s resilience to climate change, mostly in inner city and major manufacturing and processing zones.
The Vice Chairman of the Can Tho provincial People’s Committee agreed with the US Consulate General’s proposals and pledged all possible support for US partners.
He said he hoped that the US diplomat will serve as a bridge helping Can Tho gain easier access to US investors and projects, as well as hold regular meetings to promote Can Tho’s strengths and potential.
