A scientific seminar on land subsidence in the Mekong Delta – situation and solutions took place in Hanoi on December 28.
In his opening speech, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Vo Tuan Nhan said climate change, riverside landslide and land subsidence are posing challenges to the Mekong Delta.
He called for adopting measures to limit underground water exploitation and forming close collaboration between ministries and agencies in water resources management, thus ensuring the sustainable development of water resources in the Mekong Delta in response to climate change.
Deputy head of the Department of Science and Technology Nguyen Thac Cuong said underground water exploitation and urbanisation are worsening land subsidence.
Statistics showed that land in the region has sunken by 18cm per year, or even over 30cm over the past 25 years, both in rural and urban areas, which is yet to stop.
Experts and scientists suggested using satellite radars, geodesic solution, and Insar technology to monitor the problem.
Opinions at the event suggested measures to complete climate change response scenarios in the Mekong Delta, including reviewing underground water exploitation and hydrographical geology, continuing to apply monitoring results in combination with other calculations, among others.
